I was born and grew up in Harrogate where I was taught to play the harp from an early age by the renowned North Yorkshire harpist Dorothy Gilbertson, who was in fact my Great Aunt. Dorothy was very well known and respected as THE harpist in the north of England in the 1960s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. I have built up hundreds if not thousands of live performance hours at weddings and functions beginning as a teenage performer in 1995, and will bring this wealth of experience to your special day. During the early 2000’s I studied harp with Frank Sternfeld, and was privileged to study harp education with world famous harpist Christina Tourin on the International Harp Therapy Program. As a full time harpist, I have worked extensively in harp teaching and as an advocate of music for well being. My teaching methods generally facilitate learning to play the harp using creative improvisation as a cornerstone of my lessons. Over the years I have taught many local harpists, successful in their own right, maintaining close links with the wider professional network of harpists.

When considering hiring a harpist for your wedding or other special occasion you may well have one or two ideas of songs or pieces of music that are important to you. You may well wonder what is suited to the harp. The answer is that the harp is an exceptionally versatile instrument, and most genres are possible.
Having played at weddings and functions for over 18 years I have a vast romantic repertoire (not all listed online), and I am also keen to accommodate requests from clients and include up to date contemporary hits as well as classical favourites.
Celtic or Concert harp?
Both Concert harp and Celtic harp can accommodate most styles, but there are one or two pieces from my repertoire, e.g. certain jazz and modern selections that are much better suited to the concert harp.
The Celtic harp has the advantage of being more compact and easily portable, therefore is often chosen for outside playing and/or particularly small venues such as Bedern Hall and Barley Hall in York.
Please let me know if you have a preference for either harp when you get in touch, or ask if you aren’t sure which would be best for your wedding.
